The History of Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Health Science and Technology, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus is unique. It was set up as a novel Department in the 1983/84 Academic Session in the Faculty of Health Science and Technology (itself a novel Faculty) to tackle problems of the rapidly expanding health-care programmes of Nigeria. The Department is geared towards an-in-depth scientific knowledge in techniques employed in the diagnosis of diseases as well as their broad based application to cater for the Primary Health Care needs of a developing country like Nigeria.
This novel idea was concretized in the setting up of the Department of Medical Laboratory sciences in the 1983/84 Academic Session with the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The curriculum for a 5-year Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Medical Laboratory science B.MLS) was drawn up with the achieve participation of the parent professional body – the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria. Products of this programme obtain automatic registration with the Medical Laboratory science Council of Nigeria.
The Department of Medical Laboratory science offer courses leading to B.MLS degree in Medical Laboratory science. Admission is by Entrance Examination called the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and direct entry. Students offered admission by Entrance Examination undergo a five (5) year degree programme while those for direct entry undergo a four (4) year degree programme.
