THE CONCEPT OF CLINICAL NURSING RESEARCH

Clinical Nursing Research is a broad-based research group that was founded on the premise that professional nursing (practice) should be built upon a sound theoretical base that seeks to develop clinical competence of practitioners. Such practitioners are not only responsive to the changing health needs of the society but questioning outcomes of nursing interventions, also advancing and testing knowledge on which nursing practice is based. The group believes that it is through research evidence that practice will improve and quality nursing care established in Nigeria as it obtains in other countries.

JUSTIFICATION / BRIEFS

In clinical practice, nurses remain the largest group of health workers, spending 24hours with the clients. They have the potential to shape the health care delivery service of any health organization. However, their number notwithstanding, nursing care continues to be driven by tradition, authority, and stereo-typed procedure rather than research evidence, in spite of the increase in the quantity of nursing research and the inclusion of research content in current curricula by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN). Applying research findings in nursing practice is perhaps the greatest challenge facing the nursing profession today in Nigeria.
Intent: Research for knowledge to optimize quality nursing care and client sensitive nursing outcomes in all health care settings.
Research Focus: to carry out research in all aspects of clinical nursing practice in Nigeria. Also to undertake researches that will advance the international understanding and development of nursing in Nigeria as a profession and specialised discipline
